Teeth Whitening

Zoom teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the shade of the teeth and enhance the overall appearance of the smile. This in-office whitening treatment utilizes a specialized whitening gel and a powerful LED light to achieve noticeable results in a relatively short period.

Zoom teeth whitening utilizes a hydrogen peroxide-based whitening gel, which is applied to the teeth and activated by a specially designed LED light. The light accelerates the whitening process by penetrating the enamel and breaking down stains and discoloration, resulting in brighter and whiter teeth.

Considerations

Tooth Sensitivity

One of the most common side effects of teeth whitening is increased tooth sensitivity, particularly in the first couple of days after treatment. This occurs because the whitening solutions, usually containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, can temporarily make the tooth enamel more permeable.

Gum Irritation

Another frequent side effect is irritation of the gums, which can occur when the whitening product comes into contact with your gum tissue. This condition is also referred to as gingival irritation and is typically temporary and mild.

Uneven Whitening

Teeth may whiten unevenly due to several factors, including previous dental work like crowns or veneers that do not whiten like natural teeth or white spots that may become more pronounced after treatment. Further, intrinsic stains, deep within the tooth, may not respond well to bleaching.

Relapse of Colour

After achieving the desired whitening results, teeth may slowly revert to their original color, particularly if exposed regularly to foods and drinks that stain teeth like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco.

Treatment Procedure

Let's walk through your treatment procedure from start to finish.

Step 1

Preparation

Before the whitening procedure, the dentist performs a thorough dental examination to ensure the patient’s oral health and suitability for whitening treatment. Any existing dental issues, such as cavities or gum disease, may need to be addressed beforehand. Tooth mousse is given 2 weeks prior to treatment for tooth remineralisation.

Step 2

Whitening Gel Application

A protective barrier is placed over the gums and lips to shield them from the whitening gel. The hydrogen peroxide-based gel is then applied evenly to the surfaces of the teeth.

Step 3

LED Light Activation

A specially designed LED light is positioned over the teeth to activate the whitening gel and accelerate the whitening process. The light is typically left in place for about 15 to 20 minutes, during which time the gel penetrates the enamel and breaks down stains.

Step 4

Multiple Sessions (optional)

Depending on the desired level of whitening, the dentist may repeat the gel application and light activation process for additional sessions to achieve optimal results.

Step 5

Post-Treatment Evaluation

After the whitening procedure is completed, the dentist evaluates the results to ensure the desired shade of whiteness has been achieved. Any remaining whitening gel is removed, and the patient’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned and polished.

Post-Operative Care

Simple steps to protect your smile and ensure optimal results in the days following your procedure.

1

Avoid Staining Foods and Beverages

For the first 24 to 48 hours after the whitening treatment, patients should avoid consuming foods and beverages that can stain the teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored fruits.

2

 Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash help maintain the results of the whitening treatment and prevent new stains from forming.

3

Attend Regular Dental Check-ups

Routine dental check-ups and cleanings every six months allow the dentist to monitor the condition of the teeth and recommend touch-up whitening treatments if needed.
